This is the Chozuya (手水舎) at the Kumano Shrine.
This is where they have the water you can use, to wash your hands and mouth, to purify yourself before offering a prayer at the main shrine. The water of this Chozuya comes out of the mouth of a fierce-looking dragon.

I have read a book,like a travel book about Japan by Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis.
She wrote this book during his trips to the east,1932-33!

Vogon Poet, are you refering to the wooden laddles? It's called a Hishaku and they are usually made of wood or bamboo to scoop the water :)

The first time when I used the scoop (age 6), I put it back with water in it:p I really love these shrines...
