How Many Bottles Of Beer

The Bonenkai (year-end-parties) season is at full throttle and the stores have stocked their shelves with all kinds of beer.

I'm not a beer drinker so I don't really know which brand is the best. But I've heard that most Japanese brands are good. I think Asahi, Kirin, and Sapporo are the Top 3 breweries here.

What's your favorite?

Guinness Stout, but only draft in the British Isles. There used to be good bottled Guinness "Extra Stout" here in the States but it can’t be found now. The Guinness available here now just sucks.

A second choice might be Chimay red. The least expensive bottles I found in Tokyo (like a decade or more ago) were at Shinanoya in Kabukicho. Chimay is a Belgian beer made by Trappist Monks. It has a bit of a fruity flavor and it comes in three varieties with increasing alcohol content. I prefer the one with “only” 7% alcohol.

I liked Czechoslovakian Budweiser or Budwar because it had a characteristic flavor.

There is a chocolate stout I can get somewhat locally these days but I don’t drink it so often. Beer just makes me feel dull and stupid. Way too close to home. Ha ha.

Japanese beer? Tengu no dai joki [天狗の大ジョッキ] (for those uninitiated, or not as old as I, Tengu is a chain izakaya) used to do it for me. But the best places would put the beer mugs in the freezer so there would be a thin layer of ice on top of the draft beer. That was my favorite in Japan.

Beer came to feel “syrupy” to me. The canned beers I liked most didn’t stay on the market long. Does anyone remember 冴? It was not exactly brown beer. More like beige. Not to mention that I was fond of a Sae Tanaka at the time. There is a possibility she could be a grandmother by now...
