I was riding this train back to Tokorozawa the other day. I was riding on the very front train car and it was completely empty. I've noticed that the train cars on the end of either side of the train tend to be less crowded.
These are the famous characters of the manga and anime series Galaxy Express 999 (銀河鉄道999). It seems that the creator of the series, Leiji Matsumoto (松本零士) grew up along the Seibu Line, which led to this collaboration with Seibu Railways and Nerima Ward.
The blond lady you see below is Maetel, one of the main characters (and one of the only characters I actually know of) in the series. The design really stood out and everyone passing by was staring at the train. Some were even took photos, like me!

An empty train!? That's so NOT what one usually sees coming out of Japan... you know, the "packed in with white gloves" scene... :-D I know, it's not always like that; it wasn't where we were in Kansai. Cool designer train... adds color to otherwise drab vehicles.
The same thing seems to happen in the subway here too. I think it's just the fact that many people don't feel like moving all the way down to the ends of platforms. I guess that means more room for us who do! =)
The image I have of Japanese public transport is NOT: empty! :-) This is great and sooooooooo clean!

Japanese anime is very popular in France. The bookstore/music chain FNAC in France has a flagship store at Les Halles in central Paris. The anime section is always packed with people. The French call the anime books bandes designée.
I like the design of the train and the thought that room could be found on it :)

I think empty train cars are both relaxing and creepy. :) And I love it when art collides with the everyday world, such as the anime on the train.

It looks good and I think that it is a good idea to use something that a lot of people identify with. I haven't watched that anime.
