Now and Then

This bridge crosses over Yanase River.

In the 1970s, during the economic growth, the river was very polluted. But through the sewer system maintenance and community clean up efforts, Yanase River currently has very clear water.

Hopefully it stays that way.

Both shots are great, and I'm glad the water is clean.

Nice bridge story for Louis la Vache's bridge meme! Glad they cleaned it up!

the second shot - the view from the bridge? - is very interesting. it is very deep.

I think you deserve a bonus. Off to the left we can see another bridge.

It is great that the river has been cleaned up. I visited a famous house near a Bangkok khlong that assaulted my olfactory senses long before I neared it. If bottled, I guess the fragrance could be titled eau de putrefactive stench. The clear water in your photo is a sight for still-remembering-and-still-sore nostrils.

The 1970s were pretty nasty times for air pollution also, from what I understand. (I remember seeing here in the States a newspaper photograph of a nearly invisible person, lost in thick smog, who was sipping on a tube from a coin-operated oxygen supply). But this contemporary scene of Tokyo, too, could take some lessons in clarity from the water you photographed.

I like the neat plaques of your bridges: of some of ours I can't even find the real name!

Very clean indeed. Also very shallow, I guess it will fill up during the rainy season?
