Hit It, Guys!

There's nothing like the sound of the Wadaiko (Japanese Drums) outside, mixing with the sound of the breeze ruffling the leaves, and an occasional chirping of the birds.

It's not everyday we get a chance to see a Wadaiko performance. This was at the Tiger Festival at Tamon Temple. And the amazing perfomance was done by the monks as part of the festival!

I have heard this sound, mostly in movies, but wasn't sure about the name of the drums.

A sound I've never heard in person before, especially like you described it. I hope to someday!

I have seen and heard taiko played at Shinto shrines but never at Buddhist temples. I wonder how the style is different. Is there any chanting involved?

Taiko has become quite popular as an art form here in the States. For example, the San Francisco Taiko Dojo has been around since it was founded by Seiichi Tanaka in 1968.

I once saw a live performance, here in California, of KODO that totally blew me away.

Somehow reminds me to listen to ones own beat of the heart, maybe they will be in tune.
A wonderful Wednesday for you.

I saw something very like this in Hawaii one time, in a multicultural parade and exhibition. I don't know if they were Wadaiko, but they were certainly from Japan. Thanks for the memories!

We can hear performances of these drums on the plaza next to the Peace Pagoda in Japantown, San Francisco during the Cherry Blossom festival.
