I'm Nuts for Chestnuts!

Tis the season for Japanese chestnuts!

Japanese chestnuts are called "Kuri (koo-ri)" here. My favorite dish is the ever popular "Kuri Gohan," which literally translates to "chestnut rice." It's simple but tasty, especially with a sprinkle of "Goma Shio (black sesame salt)!"

I have never seen chestnut plant/tree. Nice photos - love the shiny surface. Kuri Gohan looks really nice - not something we get in Japanese restaurants in Australia.

Your photos are cool, Kaori. For some reason I'm not such a lover of roasted chestnuts... although the French chestnut paste I do like. And for some reason, your rice dish sounds wonderful! I must be hungry... ;-)

When «Louis» lived in France, he really enjoyed a chestnut spread with vanilla added on yogurt, crème fraîche, crêpes, vanilla ice cream...
YUM!

I'm nuts for nuts, too! In fact, I had to complain yesterday when my wife refused to put walnuts in her batch of chocolate chip cookies!

«Louis»neglected to mention that Mme la Vache (who lived in Japan for 15 years) likes Koori Gohan, too.

Never tasted chestnut rice, but I'd try it under your recommendation. Great photos.

I've never seen chestnut plants either. I don't even know if they come from a tree or a bush. I only see them when they're already being roasted. :D

Chestnuts season even here. Chestnuts are quite common in Tuscany and usually we eat them roasted. The local name is caldarroste.

Hi everyone! Thank you for the comments! Chestnuts seem to be in season just about everywhere :-)

Richard, if I squint I think I see it, too! lol.

Louis, I hope both you and your lady have a chance to eat it this season :-D

Leif, walnuts are also another yummy nut!

Hilda, I was surprised to see that Chestnuts grow on regular trees! For some reason I always imagined a Pinetree ;-)

VP, I'll have to remember that! It even sounds yummy :D

And to everyone else...I really do recommend the Chestnut Rice!
