In the Still of the Night

The night seems to become brighter by the year. I'm sure the sky is just as dark...but even in the middle of the night, there are lamp posts that shine and 24 hour stores that are open.

And while I am very grateful for all of this (especially when I'm walking back home from the station at night)...sometimes I miss the pitch dark nights where all you can see are the stars twinkling above.

When driving through the desert here in the States I was astounded one night at the vast number of stars in the sky. In Tokyo we could see two heavenly bodies in the sky: the moon and, on a clear night, maybe one star.

But your photo is heavenly itself and full of lights.

It is incredible what we miss by living in the city.

No pitch black night here either, I'd like to see one once...

Paris and surroundings is no different. The only thing I can see is Venus. I wish at least office towers would turn the lights off and people would just close the curtains...

I like your shot a lot.

Good monochrome shot, Kaori - it wouldn't be as effective in color.

Yes, I know what you mean. We only get to see nice shiny stars when we are out in the country.

I live in between two cities, in an area where it's still just possible to see the Milky Way (although city lights can be seen in the distance both north and south when it's cloudy). But both cities are encroaching further, and in the last five years it's become noticeably lighter at night even at our house.

Kaori, don't ask me why, but this shot makes me think of Murakami's "After Dark"... Good monochrome!
